Johnes disease in cattle:
What age are cattle most susceptible for picking up the disease?
• 0-6 months of age. It was once described to me as shit in mouth disease.
We get very hung up about not giving colostrum to calves from infected Mums and forget about the fact that we had an infected cow that was shedding huge amounts of MAP in her poo in the calving pen. This is far more of a risk, as we can infect lots of calves this way, and one we forget about.
• It is why it is so important for red cows to calve in a separate calving box!
