Boehringer Ingelheim has launched Bovikalc® Dry, an oral mineral supplement to help support drying off.
• The dry period is a crucial resting period, giving the udder the opportunity to repair and regenerate between lactations. The drying-off process can be a difficult, uncomfortable and stressful period.
• Cows may still be producing considerable amounts of milk, and within a few hours, the accumulation of milk in the mammary gland can lead to udder distension and engorgement.
• Discomfort from udder distension leads to reduced lying time, with cows resting for shorter periods in an attempt to relieve pressure on the udder. This is also a high risk period for new intramammary infections which may not become clinical mastitis cases until the following lactation.
• Bovikalc® Dry, is a bolus that contains anionic salts. Bovikalc® Dry helps support the natural decrease in milk production at the end of a lactation cycle. Reduced milk production helps to reduce milk congestion in the udder, and associated pain and inflammation as well as reducing the risk of milk and hence dry cow therapy tubes running out after infusion.
Two boluses are given at the last milking or 8-12 hours before. Following oral administration the bolus dissolves within 30 minutes in the rumen, where the anionic salts are released and then absorbed.....
